Highly Devoted People:
_This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everything. Titus 3:7-8
Some of us see this new year as an opportunity to devote ourselves to something new. At the beginning of last year, Time Magazine published an article that listed the top ten commonly broken New Year's resolutions: Lose Weight and Get Fit, Quit Smoking, Learn Something New, Eat Healthier and Diet, Get Out of Debt and Save Money, Spend More Time with Family, Travel to New Places, Be Less Stressed, Volunteer, Drink Less.
This January at Platte City UMC, we will be exploring the lives of highly devoted people. What characteristic, qualities, or circumstances help them develop lives that are devoted when others fail to follow through. Highly devoted people are people who are devoted to something greater than themselves. They are drawn to others who are optimistic about the future because they believe their devotion is not in vain. Highly devoted people have a story, a community, a purpose and a hope.
There are many examples of highly devoted people in the Bible. In the 6th century BC, a foreign country invaded Israel and took many Israelites were allowed to return to their homeland. There was a great excitement as they began to rebuild, but as time passed, enthusiasm began to fade and they were filled with despair. Nehemiah, who was still living in another country, hears of his people's condition. He was deeply concerned about the needs of his people. He went from being deeply concerned to being deeply devoted to a cause that was greater than himself. He devoted himself to rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and strengthening the hope of struggling people.
We will be examining the life of Nehemiah this month and the qualities he had that enabled him to be a highly devoted person. I hope you will join us this January as we seek to grow in our devotion as followers of Jesus Christ.
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff
